Condom machines, speed dating help stop HIV at CSU

by Jonathan Halsall

The Cleveland State University Safer Sex Committee has made a commitment to stop the spread of HIV and AIDS in the university community by making public restrooms safer, installing condom machines, advertising safer sex and testing, creating workshops, and encouraging professors to incorporate HIV and AIDS into the learning experience at CSU.

Since 1997, the committee has operated to prevent HIV on campus and to educate the campus community. Headed by Andrea Schmidt, director of CSU's Health and Wellness Services, and Dr. Bruce Menapace of CSU's Counseling Center, the Safer Sex Committee has received grants from the City of Cleveland's Department of Public Health AIDS Office for the past two years.

The committee has worked to make the campus safer by reducing sex in campus restrooms. Some restrooms have been remodeled with walls erected between the urinals and the stalls. Also, the committee has worked with CSU police to make campus restrooms safer. In addition to Schmidt and Menapace, the committee consists of representatives from Judicial Affairs, Residence Life, Health and Wellness Services, the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, Dance, the AIDS Taskforce, and the student body.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, two groups who have high rates of new HIV infections are men who have sex with men and women of color. It is no surprise, then, that this year's grant at CSU focuses on MSM and women of color. To reach these populations, Dr. Menapace and Dr. Paula Mickens-English of the CSU Counseling hold workshops. Mickens-English leads African American relationship workshops. Menapace started a weekly Men and Gay Issues Discussion Hour and also holds educational workshops. By providing support, relationship skills, and preventive knowledge, these workshops look to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Last year, Dr. Menapace, with his student assistant Adam Cunningham-Reid, produced four workshops for the MSM population. First, Menapace and Cunningham-Reid worked with the Lesbian and Gay Community Center to provide a Speed Dating workshop.

Menapace presented the second workshop called "Beating the Meat Market: Finding the Relationship You Want," which explored the ins and outs of relationships and dating for MSM. The third workshop was a panel discussion about gay men, sexual addiction and compulsive sex; it addressed internalized stereotypes of gay men, namely that gay men have sex all the time and are very promiscuous.

Finally, the fourth workshop was a HIV discussion featuring Mikell Nagy, CSU student, AIDS activist, and male dancer. Nagy addressed the transmission of HIV and becoming more comfortable using condoms. This year, Dr. Menapace plans to continue to do workshops for the MSM population.

In addition to funding workshops, the City of Cleveland grant has allowed the Safer Sex Committee to install six condom machines in the university. Also, in its commitment to safer sex, the committee has installed signs in over 50 men's restrooms informing men to get tested at Health Services. This year's grant will allow the committee to install these signs, as well as some condom machines, in the women's restrooms. Confidential and anonymous HIV testing by appointment is available for CSU students, faculty and staff at CSU Health Services, Science Research Building, room 153, 216687-3649.

World AIDS Day activities, jointly sponsored by the Safer Sex Committee and the CSU student organization Gay Lesbian and Straight Alliance will be held Tuesday, December 2, in the CSU University Center from 11 am to 2 pm.

Jonathan Halsall is the co-president of GLASA at CSU.
